Summary:

Thawikayhigan LP (TKG Group) is owned equally by Kingfisher Lake First Nation, Kasabonika Lake
First Nation, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Wapekeka, Wawakapewin, and Wunnumin Lake First Nations.


TKG Group was established in November 2018 to secure contract work with the Watay Power Project.
TKG Group is a 100 percent First Nation owned business development group that supports regional
social enterprise, seeks collaborations with other First Nations, creates key business alliances
and partnerships, makes strategic investments, and uses profits to remain as a financially viable
business organization that contributes to the development of healthy First Nation communities with
vibrant economies that support future generations through employment, capacity building,
participation in regional industries, thereby reducing poverty, while enhancing and promoting First
Nation cultural and traditional activities.

Description:

The Economic Development Officer (EDO) will work to develop the corporate structures, board member
training and governance models to provide the communities with the capacity to move forward with
these business opportunities. The EDO will also work to assess and develop a plan to implement the
most promising medium and long-term goals for each priority. Also, the EDO will actively
facilitating and developing initiatives with other businesses corporations, First Nations, First
Nation businesses, and Regional First Nation groups, also TKG develops, plans, and creates (legacy)
businesses with a regional focus that support the socio-economic development aspirations of its
ownership communities.

Requirements:

  • Experience implementing economic/business development activities.
  • Knowledge of the Shibogama and TKG community's culture, history, goals, and aspirations.
  • Knowledge in procurement and relevant industries to Shibogama and TKG, such as procurement &
    logistics, mining and construction is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of business development, enterprise,
    innovation, and growth.
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining relationships with business partners,
    Indigenous communities, and government.
  • Understanding finance models and opportunities for businesses, particularly for First Nations-
    owned corporations and band-empowered entities.  
Builds relationships in economic development with business partners, Indigenous
communities, and government (35% of time)

 

  • Act as a liaison between Shibogama & TKG Communities, local organizations, businesses and
    individuals, along with representatives of government, business and industry, and other
    Indigenous communities concerning economic development and other areas as deemed
    necessary.
  • Represent the community at economic conferences at the local, regional and national levels.
    Pursue partnerships to build a regional business centre.
  • Develop materials and aid communities in accessing economic resources
    Organize and facilitate events and meetings.
  • Attend conferences, tradeshows, and career fairs for investment attraction and recruitment.
    Facilitate and/or set up workshops to help first nation members develop and implement
    business plans.  

Supports and implements an Economic Development Strategic Action Plan. (35% of time)

  • Liaise with Consultants to establish and support a new Economic Development strategic Action Plan.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of strategies, projects and initiatives for economic development.
  • Assist in management of Economic Development budgets.
  • Monitors and examines market conditions and emerging trends which may impact existing and potential economic development
    and recommend appropriate action(s).
  • Research private and public real-estate and other economic funding opportunities for TKG as directed by Senior Management.  
Participates in business planning, strategic planning, and initiatives in support of economic
development opportunities within the Shibogama and TKG territory. (30% of time)
  • Participates in the development of economic development strategies, objectives, and long
    range plans for economic development within TKG territories. Including but not limited to:
    • Youth in business
    • Resource projects -biomass, transportation, and education
    • Partner identification
    • Business climate
    • Economic conditions for business development
    • Monitor market analysis and economic opportunities
    • Identify opportunities for joint ventures and assist with any negotiations
    • Training  

Education and Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, Economic
    Development and Marketing, Public Administration, or equivalent related field of study
  • Experience in business and financial management with an organizational environment
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and Executive Committee
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
    Business development: 1 year preferred

  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Salary: $80,000 - $85,000 per year
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday - overtime as required
